Problem Solving Methods: Simpler problems can often be resolved by putting together a few bright minds to brainstorm possible causes and solutions. Some problems, however, are not so easy to resolve. For bigger challenges, a thorough systems analysis is required.
Regardless of the problem solving method, once the probable cause has been determined, the focus of the team shifts towards the development of possible solutions that will fix the problem and prevent reoccurrence. The most promising solutions are ranked by their ability to solve the problem, ease of implementation, estimated costs, and probable implementation time.
The leading candidate is then prototyped and tested to determine how well it addresses the problem. This process continues until a viable solution is found that meets all performance requirements without adversely affecting the product cost and implementation time. The solution is implemented, and the problem-solving team manages the design changes through implementation until confirming that the problem has been satisfactorily resolved in the field.
