Kodi Klip® Klipper™ tool
Dayton Superior has been a leading provider of construction products and services for over 100 years. Their product lines include reinforced concrete hardware and fabrication systems, construction adhesives, bracing systems, rebar splicing products, and concrete forming solutions.
Dayton Superior acquired the KODI KLIP® brand several years ago, and the product line has been gaining traction in the marketplace. The patented plastic K-KLIP™ design has several advantages over steel wire wrapping, as the K-KLIPS™ do not rust over time, they are faster and easier to install, and they create stiffer connections that increase the rigidity and reduce the flex of rebar joints and frames.
Challenge
The pneumatic KODI KLIP® tool was performing well in the market, but customers were asking for a cordless, battery-powered tool that would not require the user to move an air hose around the fabrication site. In addition, evolving safety standards have incentivized industrial tool manufacturers to reduce the number of air hoses and power cords used on job sites.
Dayton Superior set out to design a cordless KODI KLIP® gun that would meet customer needs. The new tool would need to be rugged and reliable for the industrial market, and it would need to be intuitive and easy to use, as well. Dayton Superior’s engineering staff was booked up with other priority work. Their team retained Design Integrity to assist with the development of the new tool, as we have extensive experience designing complex new power tools for our clients.
Design Solution
The new cordless KODI KLIP® assembly tool was designed to work with the size 4 and size 5 K-KLIPS™, which are the two top selling K-KLIPS™ in the product line.
The tool utilizes a powerful pneumatic nail gun mechanism to drive the K-KLIPS™ onto rebar joints, which allows the next K-KLIP™ to be installed as soon as the nose of the tool is properly positioned over the next rebar joint.
The housing of the tool is made with a high-strength, injection-molded plastic for durability and light weight. The tool is powered with a lithium-ion battery from Metabo, a trusted name in the industrial power tool marketplace.
